Alarm Fatigue and its Effects on Quality Patient Care Essay example --
Hospitalized patients are often hooked up to monitoring devices such as heart monitors, which monitor the electric activity of the heart, or connected to a physiological monitor so their vital signs are constantly being measured. These monitors are intended to continuously assess the patientsââ¬â¢ status, and alarm if the patientsââ¬â¢ status drops below what is considered normal. The increased use of monitoring devices has created a new phenomenon known as alarm fatigue. According to the ECRI institute (2011), ââ¬Å"alarm fatigue occurs when the sheer number of alarms overwhelms staff and they become desensitized to the alarms resulting in delayed alarm response and missed alarms-often resulting in patient harm or even death.â⬠Alarm fatigue has become a major problem within the nursing community and has already had a negative impact on patient safety. Due to the adverse effects alarm fatigue is having on quality patient care, there has been a call to action to find s olutions that may deter alarm fatigue. Evidence-based practices involving quality improvement initiatives have been put into effect. The problem has also gained national attention from such institutions as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and The Joint Commission (TJC). Relevance to the Profession of Nursing According to the Registered Nurse (RN) Scope of Practice Position Statement, ââ¬Å"the RN is responsible for providing safe, compassionate, and comprehensive nursing care to patients and their families with complex healthcare needsâ⬠(Texas Board of Nursing, 2011). Nurses often care for five to six patients at one time; therefore, in order to provide the best quality care, patients are often connected to monitoring devices such as, physiological monitors, venti... ...ientSafetyOrganization/Documents/PSO_Monthly_ Brief/ECRI%20Institute%20PSO%20Monthly%20Brief%20v1.pdf Graham, C. Waking up is never the highlight of my day, but never the less tat time of day always comes every morning. This morning was no different. Black and Yellow blared through my phone at 0630 like I asked it to, but it just seemed too early. I fought to truly wake up right away, then I laughed at myself for thinking that thought. Seeing how being out of the house was the goal that morning, I decided to get out of bed at 0700. When I woke up that morning it was not my goal to nag my husband to death, but lucky him it happened. He decided to make chili in the dining room. I am not sure why he did it, and when I asked him he just said that he wanted to. I donââ¬â¢t think the dining room is a place to cook, but he thought so this morning. The roles that I play on any given day range from all sorts of things. When I wake up I am always a mom and a wife. I am here for my husband to help him and guide him when things donââ¬â¢t happen the way that I want. Being a mom is the best thing, and knowing that when I wake up I get both of those roles is why I get up in the morning. The hardest part that I have in these roles is being the person that I want to be. I know that I can do the best that I can and that is how things should be, but I know and feel like I can be better and I want to be that person. Another role that I most recently started playing was cashier at the commissary. That one is a tough one. I need to be able to hold my tongue when need be, but be able to speak my mind occasionally.

Student Debt Is The Cost Of An Education - 3402 Words
In the U.S. students are encouraged to earn a college degree, but the cost of an education turns many away. ââ¬Å"Driven by the allure of a decent salary with a college degree, Americans borrowed to go to school. Outstanding student debt doubled from 2005 to 2010, and by 2012 total student debt in the U.S. economy surpassed $1 trillionâ⬠(Mian, Sufi 167). There are plenty of opportunities to obtain funds for college, including one of the most common, student loans. A student loan is defined as ââ¬Å"a common way to fund education, specifically college and graduate school, and they provide educational opportunities that you otherwise may not be able to affordâ⬠(Barr). Student debt is at an all-time high in America. Over half of all lower incomeâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦President Obama seems to be helping with these debts the best that he can with certain programs that he has made available to the lower working class that are attempting to attend college. I believe th at the government should be helping out students that are responsible enough to take on the commitment. Although societyââ¬â¢s norms lead people to believe that student loans are the ideal solution to fund a college education, in actuality, it is more likely to drive students deeper into poverty without government assistance. Colleges are noticing a drop in studentsââ¬â¢ interest in a higher education, because it forces them to fall into poverty. Obtaining a higher education is a dream of many working class citizens, but the price to go to a choice college is not available economically. The majority of students use some type of student loan, they have become the norm for attending college (Johnston, Roten 24). College is becoming unaffordable to many lower class students. With tuition prices this high, students are backing out of school and looking for jobs that only require a high school diploma. Student loans should help people, but it is only hurting them because they feel like they can never repay it. Especially since student debt continues to rise. ââ¬Å"Student loan debt rose by 328 percent from $241 million in 2003 to $1.08 trillion in 2013, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New Yorkâ⬠(Johnston, Roten 25).
